Conservation & Responsible Tourism

At the heart of all that we do is our mission to promote conservation and responsible tourism practices. We are dedicated to showcasing the unparalleled natural treasures of Trinidad & Tobago while preserving these resources for generations of future visitors. We consider ourselves stewards of their homes, so we have made concerted efforts to reduce our ecological imprint, while providing awe-inspiring, regenerative, wildlife experiences that contribute to the conservation of biodiversity, preserve local heritage and cultural diversity and improve the lives of local communities.

Research & Eco-Tourism Programs

We do more than provide a window for visitors into our natural world – we aim to protect endangered species that make their home on our grounds, from the Leatherback turtle to the Trinidad Piping-guan and more.

At each property and at the heart of what we do, we are mindful custodians of vulnerable species and are committed to creating an environment where they can establish a peaceful, natural habitat and thrive. Our team works alongside local partners to establish and support programs that protect a colony of rare Oilbirds, the critically endangered Trinidad Piping-guan (Pawi) and endangered Leatherback turtle, among others. We see the value in providing our guests with a unique opportunity to witness these animals in their natural habitat, through guided tours led by our expert naturalists, and to learn about how these programs have united and brought opportunity to our community.

Our team is dedicated to sharing Biodiversity Briefs that highlight the stories, discoveries, and research that shape our conservation efforts across Trinidad and Tobago. From rare bird sightings of favourites like the Ruby-topaz Hummingbird to habitat and behavioral studies, we aim to bridge fieldwork with public awareness, strengthening the connection between nature, science, and community. Moreover, we hope to inspire future conservation initiatives with an aim to promote research tourism.

We’re also learning about the science behind different bird calls in the hopes of helping bring the healing power of nature into the greater community. Read more here

Local Community Engagement

Local Community Engagement

We are proud that the experiences we offer truly reflect Trinidadian hospitality and expertise. Our properties and tours are 100% staffed by locals. In addition to tour guides and excursions, we work alongside and support small local businesses and entrepreneurs. We are proud members of the local communities in which our properties are situated, so we source our produce, seafood, and goods from local vendors. We also proudly hire locally and partner with community organisations to support nature tour guides and help refurbish public spaces.

Volunteer Opportunities

At HADCO Experiences, we believe in travel that gives back. Our volunteer programs offer guests the chance to make a meaningful impact while immersing themselves in the local environment and communities. From wildlife conservation and habitat restoration to supporting local schools and community projects, each opportunity is designed to be hands-on, educational, and rewarding.
Whether you’re planting trees, monitoring bird populations, or assisting with community initiatives, you’ll leave knowing you’ve contributed to something lasting while creating memories that go far beyond the typical vacation experience.
Join us and discover how meaningful travel can be. Every small effort helps protect the natural beauty and vibrant communities that make our destinations so special.

Environmental Initiatives and Certifications

As part of our commitment to Regenerative Tourism, our properties:

  • Help eliminate single-use plastics with hot/cold water coolers and by promoting reusable bottles.
  • Practice water conservation by using low-pressure shower heads, composting kitchen waste and implementing solar-powered systems to reduce resource consumption.
  • Promote energy efficiency: with the use of solar bollard lights, eco-friendly R290 refrigerant AC units, and by launching a solar panel project to supply 80% of our energy needs at Asa Wright Nature Centre.
  • Support Leatherback turtle protection with turtle-friendly red lights and eco-partnerships.
  • Promote bird and forest conservation.
  • Maintain clean and safe natural environments.

We also conduct continued field observations and structured monitoring programs to ensure the continued health of the birds and creatures who call our nature reserve home. To that end, we’ve implemented floral resource surveys to document seasonal fluctuations in nectar availability; conducted standardised seasonal bird surveys to assess the frequency and patterns of occurrence for C. jourdanii and other infrequently recorded hummingbirds; and encouraged photographic and acoustic documentation to improve reporting accuracy and species detection.

As part of our ongoing efforts to improve our offerings, we are Green Key Certified and pursuing Regenera Certification for HADCO Experiences at Asa Wright Nature Centre and Mt. Plaisir Estate Hotel.

Restoring a Piece of Trinidad’s History

Established in 1967 with a mission of wildlife conservation, education, and scientific research, HADCO Experiences now operates the ecolodge at Asa Wright Nature Centre, reopened as a haven for birdwatchers seeking to connect with our 170 native species, including the rare oilbird.

We lovingly restored the property while honoring the tenets of our Trust Agreement to care for this dedicated nature preserve. To that end, we also make efforts to improve the efficiency of the Centre’s agricultural potential, providing an ecologically sound relationship between the natural habitat and its agriculturally developed portions.

Similarly, when renovating Mt. Plaisir Estate Hotel, HADCO Experiences worked with the Grande Riviere Nature Tour Guide Association, the Grande Riviere community, and the Environmental Management Authority to install NXT LED turtle-friendly lights in the area. These lights are instrumental in mitigating the adverse effects of lighting pollution on the endangered Leatherback turtles during their nesting periods. Major infrastructural improvements were also undertaken to enhance services, preserving the essence of this decades-old structure, while keeping the local community engaged. Completely renovated guest rooms and buildings feature energy-efficient air conditioning and low lighting (under 3,000 kelvin) in the rooms to reduce light pollution; water dispensers have been installed around the compound to reduce the presence of single-use plastics. Every upgrade made to our properties is carefully considered, ensuring it will not have a negative impact on our incredible natural surroundings.
