Turquoise Honeycreeper at Asa Wright Nature Centre in Trinidad

Dreaming of an unforgettable Caribbean adventure? If you’re passionate about wildlife, birdwatching, rainforests and authentic experiences, Trinidad and Tobago offers one of the most biodiverse destinations in the region.

Situated where the Caribbean meets South America, these twin islands are home to ancient rainforests, internationally significant wetlands, pristine beaches, nesting Leatherback turtles, vibrant coral reefs and more than 500 bird species. From world-class birdwatching to hidden waterfalls and spectacular coastal landscapes, there’s something to discover around every corner.

This seven-day itinerary from HADCO Experiences combines the very best of Trinidad’s extraordinary natural heritage with a relaxing finale on the island of Tobago, creating the perfect balance of adventure, wildlife and Caribbean charm.

Day 1: Arrive in Trinidad & Discover the Rainforest at HADCO Experiences at Asa Wright Nature Centre

Begin your nature escape at HADCO Experiences at Asa Wright Nature Centre, one of the Caribbean’s most celebrated eco-lodges and birdwatching destinations.

Hidden within Trinidad’s Northern Range, this approximately 1,500-acre protected rainforest is internationally recognised for its exceptional biodiversity. Whether you’re an avid birder or simply looking to reconnect with nature, it’s the perfect introduction to Trinidad.

An overnight stay includes serene and relaxing accommodation, freshly prepared meals, afternoon tea, guided walks and access to the property’s extensive network of rainforest trails.

Spend the afternoon unwinding on the famous verandah, where hummingbirds, honeycreepers, tanagers and countless other tropical birds visit throughout the day: a spectacular welcome to Trinidad’s remarkable wildlife.

Day 2: Rainforest Adventures & Nocturnal Wildlife

Wake to the sounds of the rainforest before joining a guided walk through the reserve.

Visit the Famous Oilbird Cave

Explore Dunston Cave, home to Trinidad’s only easily accessible breeding colony of the remarkable and rare Oilbird. These fascinating nocturnal birds navigate using echolocation, making them one of the world’s most unusual bird species.

Keep your binoculars close as you walk the trails. More than 170 bird species have been recorded within the reserve, alongside butterflies, reptiles, amphibians and native mammals.

Swim in Natural Rainforest Pools

After your morning hike, cool off in one of the property’s natural bathing pools before enjoying lunch surrounded by lush rainforest.

Explore Mount Tamana Bat Cave

Later, travel to Mount Tamana for one of Trinidad’s most extraordinary wildlife experiences on a private tour.

Once part of an ancient coral reef, the cave now provides habitat for 12 species of bats. As the sun begins to set, millions emerge from the cave entrance in a mesmerising natural spectacle.

Return to HADCO Experiences at Asa Wright Nature Centre for dinner before joining an optional guided night walk, where the rainforest comes alive with frogs, tarantulas, snakes, scorpions, owls and other nocturnal wildlife.

Day 3: Scarlet Ibises, Mangroves & Grande Riviere

Wake early and head to the Caroni Bird Sanctuary, one of Trinidad and Tobago’s most important protected wetlands.

Covering approximately 12,000 acres of mangrove forest, this internationally recognised Ramsar site is famous as the home of Trinidad’s national bird, the magnificent Scarlet Ibis.

A guided sunrise boat tour through the winding mangrove channels offers opportunities to spot:

  • Scarlet Ibises
  • Caimans
  • Tree boas
  • Herons
  • Egrets
  • Kingfishers
  • Crabs
  • Numerous wetland bird species

Later, continue your journey to Mt. Plaisir Estate Hotel in Grande Riviere, where the mountains meet the Caribbean Sea.

Spend the evening relaxing on the beach before enjoying dinner overlooking one of the world’s most important Leatherback turtle nesting beaches.

If travelling between March and August, join an evening turtle tour led by authorised local conservation guides and witness one of nature’s most unforgettable spectacles as these gentle giants come ashore to lay their eggs.

Day 4: Rare Birds & Trinidad's Wild North Coast

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast overlooking Grande Riviere before setting out to explore Trinidad’s spectacular north-east coast.

Nature enthusiasts should make time to visit Pawi Lodge, an intimate retreat just a 5-minute drive away surrounded by pristine forest and one of the island’s premier birdwatching locations.

This area offers one of the best opportunities to spot the critically endangered Trinidad Piping Guan (Pawi), one of only two bird species endemic to Trinidad.

Spend the afternoon exploring scenic forest trails, photographing tropical wildlife or simply relaxing in one of the Caribbean’s most peaceful natural settings.

Return to Mt. Plaisir Estate Hotel for another evening by the sea.

Day 5: Hidden Beaches, Sea Caves & Waterfalls

Discover Trinidad’s dramatic north coast aboard a traditional pirogue. Cruise past towering cliffs, hidden coves, sea caves and dramatic rock formations sculpted by the Caribbean Sea.

Highlights include:

  • Rock formations
  • Hidden sea caves
  • Remote beaches
  • Coastal rainforest

The journey concludes at beautiful Paria Bay, followed by a short rainforest walk to Paria Waterfall, where a crystal-clear plunge pool offers the perfect place for a refreshing swim.

Keep an eye—and ear—out for the Guianan Red Howler Monkey, one of the loudest land mammals in the world, whose unmistakable calls echo through the surrounding forest.

Day 6: Discover Tobago

Today, take a short domestic flight from Piarco airport (approximately 25 minutes) to the beautiful island of Tobago.

Known for its slower pace of life, white-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters, Tobago provides the perfect complement to Trinidad’s rainforest adventures.

Spend the afternoon unwinding on one of the island’s beautiful beaches, snorkelling vibrant coral reefs, exploring charming fishing villages or enjoying fresh seafood overlooking the Caribbean Sea.

Those looking to continue their wildlife adventures can also visit the Main Ridge Forest Reserve, the oldest legally protected rainforest reserve in the Western Hemisphere and another exceptional destination for birdwatching and hiking.

Day 7: Relax, Explore & Depart

Enjoy one final day soaking up Tobago’s relaxed island atmosphere.

Choose to snorkel at Buccoo Reef, kayak through tranquil bays, hike rainforest trails or simply unwind beneath the shade of a palm tree before your onward journey. For travellers seeking the perfect Caribbean escape, few destinations offer such a rewarding combination of wildlife, culture, rainforest and beach within a single holiday.
