Regenerative Travel: What It Is and How Trinidad Is Leading the Way

regenerativeTravel
Those engaged with regenerative travel take a different approach to how the world is treated. Instead of placing travellers at the centre of each experience or venue, nature and local ecosystems become the main focus of this philosophy, specifically through efforts to restore, protect and enhance the planet’s natural environments.
Rather than outside actors entering a destination as heroic saviours, regenerative tourism is centred on community, empowering local populations to be at the heart of conservation and tourism efforts in their region. As a result, this type of tourism looks very different around the world. Solutions that work for one destination may not be as effective for a different community elsewhere on the planet.
Still, certain elements of the regenerative tourism model can be universal. That’s why, in Trinidad and Tobago, HADCO Experiences is proud to demonstrate how community-led regenerative tourism can thrive in the Caribbean.

Regenerative Travel in Trinidad and Tobago

Restoring, preserving and strengthening the precious natural surroundings of Trinidad and Tobago has always been at the heart of the HADCO Experiences philosophy.
At HADCO Experiences at Asa Wright Nature Centre, a nature preserve and eco-lodge located in Trinidad’s Northern Range rainforest, the first course of action after assuming stewardship of the property in 2021 was to engage in an extensive restoration project that honoured both the history and wildlife of this landmark conservation site.
The Northern Range rainforest is one of the most important biodiversity regions in Trinidad, supporting hundreds of bird species and remarkable rainforest wildlife. Protecting and restoring this ecosystem ensures that future visitors can continue to experience one of the Caribbean’s most important nature tourism destinations.
Similarly, when this approach was expanded to Mt. Plaisir Estate Hotel in Grande Riviere, home to one of the Western Hemisphere’s most significant Leatherback turtle nesting beaches, the team invested in turtle-friendly lighting for the surrounding communities and collaborated with the Grande Riviere Nature Tour Guide Association in meaningful ways. These measures help reduce disorientation for nesting turtles and hatchlings while strengthening regenerative tourism efforts beyond the borders of the property.
Of course, while restoring what once was, the goal is also to focus on what exists now and what could be. Sustainability and responsible tourism practices were at the forefront of renovations. This commitment was recently recognised when both flagship properties earned Green Key Certification, an internationally recognised eco-label celebrating excellence in environmental stewardship and sustainable tourism operations.
While this achievement is certainly a proud moment for the team, we are perhaps even prouder to reach these milestones together with our community. Local community members remain at the heart of every initiative, from the 100% Trinidadian staff to locally guided nature excursions, wildlife experiences and culinary offerings that celebrate the rich flavours of Trinidad and Tobago’s cultural heritage.
By hiring locally, HADCO Experiences has not only provided meaningful employment opportunities for community neighbours, but has also ensured that, as a community, we can genuinely preserve, share and celebrate Trinidad and Tobago’s unique cultural and environmental traditions with visitors from around the world.

Better, Together

To truly honour the principles of regenerative travel and responsible tourism, strong partnerships must form between tourism operators, travellers and local communities.
When these groups work together, we can maximise efforts to protect biodiversity, restore fragile ecosystems and support community-led tourism development, ensuring that the natural beauty of destinations like Trinidad and Tobago can be experienced by generations to come.
Through this commitment to regenerative tourism in the Caribbean, HADCO Experiences is demonstrating that this model is not only effective, it is also inspiring.
And we look forward to the day when more destinations around the world join us in building a more sustainable and regenerative future for global travel.
